The Congoville exhibition, which ran from May 29 to October 3, 2021, at the Middelheim Museum in Antwerp, explored Belgium’s colonial past through the lens of contemporary art.
Fifteen international artists used the museum’s grounds as a setting for an imaginary city, “Congoville,” to examine the physical and mental traces of colonialism. The exhibition incorporated elements like a school building, a park, and imperialist myths, as well as the experiences of people of African descent born in Belgium.
